31 March Taonga claim in row on trees

Waitara's riverside pohutukawa trees are considered taonga by a Bay of Plenty hapu, Ngai Te Hapu Incorporated of Motiti Island.

The yellow flowering specimen, known as Metrosideros excelsa Aurea, was originally given to the Duncan and Davies nursery in the 1940s by the hapu and four of the first plants grown there were planted alongside the Waitara River.
